Hey, just listened to the 05-31-2013 podcast. Great show overall, but the Pat Robertson segment caused me some pain. Flogging ole Pat’s ignorant remarks is always fun and not very difficult, in this case ripping Robertson’s reactionary defense of the Ecuadoran Christian minister presidential candidate stripped of his political rights for one year and fined for making homophobic remarks during his recent presidential campaign (the minister received 1.23% of the vote by the way).

Story >> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-21750105

So Jimmy asked, “I didn’t know Ecuador was so forward thinking. Did you? I wouldn’t think they would be.”

To which Katy Lazarus replies, “No, they are not progressive generally. It’s a Catholic country.”

Jimmy asks again, “But how could that be if they have this law…?”

To which Lazarus repeats, “It’s a Catholic country.” To which Jim Earl starts riffing about “but they have very progressive Nazis” etc.

Those remarks are painful to hear coming from folks who present themselves as bad ass progressives. First, the remarks are shockingly anti-Catholic (Catholics can’t be progressive; anyone hear of “revolutionary liberation theology”?) and even racist. Second, they reveal an out-of-date understanding of recent Latin American history and current realities.

For example, the Ecuadoran government is presently giving Wikileaks’ Julian Assange political asylum in its London embassy. Ecuador is facing down both Britain and the US right now.

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa is one of South America’s most progressive, leftist leaders, an ally of the late Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia and others on the left. Correa was re-elected president “for a third term with nearly 60% of the vote” (BBC) to that homophobic Christian minister’s 1.23% share of the vote. In 2008 Correa declared Ecuador’s national debt an illegitimate odious debt incurred by previous reactionary, corrupt governments which Ecuador would not pay. Correa ejected the US military and its air base from Ecuador in 2009. Correa spearheaded the drive that gave Ecuador a new, very progressive national constitution in 2008.

So carry on making fun of the right’s ignorance by all means. I enjoy that. But left political satirists especially need to be working out of correct facts. It makes the humor funnier and more progressive.

I still love you! Take care.

Yayers a new bed time story I love it. I know where I left off in your past podcasts. I made it all the way to comedy and everything else 156. It’s now on page 32. I feel like I am getting somewhere but with it keep updating I feel like I am not getting close to page 1.

Not page 1 but the page with the first podcast. If they all work.

I have a question about part of the podcast. You said that you would want to kill the people who dropped a bomb on your brother. My question is which one of your brothers does that applies to?

Continue to my above comment. Does that also apply to your sister(s).

I can’t sleep tonight and this entertains me.

Steve, I had a feeling that we were wrong about Ecuador and so I did a little research after the show and found out we were wrong, and now you have let me know just how wrong we were. My apologies, we will correct on next show.

Kazooga, good to hear you liking the show, and just some of my sisters.

Thanks for rethinking Equador comments. Would you also rethink your bullying tone with Jim Earl regarding Code pink story? I’m a longtime listener and have noticed more “my way or the highway” from Jimmy recently. Your topics are not blackn white as the Equador topic showed. When Jim reflects a different view than Jimmy’s, it makes the show more interesting. So calm down Jimmy and consider this next time yourfirst instinct is to slam him like Joe Scarsbough would….. Love the show. Come to Portland, we miss you!

Nico, for the record, it was not I who said the stuff about Equador, but I am always glad to correct any misinformation that gets out on the show.

Jim Earl is a very big boy with a razor sharp wit and has no problem defending his positions. To paint me as someone who doesn’t tolerate differing opinions would be insulting if it weren’t so ridiculous. I would request you do a little research into the difference between holding someones feet to the fire during a spirited debate and bullying.

Cant wait to get back to Portland!
